The King of Things & The One Trick Wand

Since the 1st December I have been revealing my latest The King of Things comic a panel a day, advent calendar style, on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. The story concluded yesterday on the 12th. You can read the whole story below or if you’re reading on a phone try this version instead.

I tried a different style than my usual work, aiming for a more classically animated look, and although it took me some time to figure out this new method of drawing backgrounds, I’m pretty happy with the result.

Last week, on Tuesday 4th December, the famous and long running children’s comic The Dandy went on sale in print for the last time and BBC Radio Manchester popped around to my house, at 7am, to interview me about my thoughts on this and to discuss my own work. I was thrilled that reporter Michelle Adamson took such an interest in my work and, bizarrely, we ended up performing an impromptu radio play of ‘The King of Things & The One Trick Wand’ live on air! You can listen to the bulk of the performance here.

Expect a longer King of Things story sometime next year.

The King of Things process

Here’s a panel from an upcoming The King of Things one pager called The One Trick Wand. I tried a different style with this comic aiming for a more traditional animation feel, so I thought I’d share my process with this animated gif.

The Shrunken Giant Penny & Paper Science 7

It is finally here, Paper Science 7! It contains the fourth and final part of my children’s comic The King of Things & The Shrunken Giant Penny. Part 1 was published way back in April 2011 so if you’ve been wondering how it all ends you can buy it right now and find out. I’m really pleased with how this story turned out and it was a lot of fun to write and draw. A thank you is owed to Mr. Matthew Sheret for allowing The King and I to run rampant within the pages of his publication. There will be more King of Things stories on the way, don’t you worry about that.

Editor Sheret has put together another wonderful issue, there’s some gems in there from new faces and familiar names alike. This is also the last in the current run of Paper Science so if you haven’t read any of the previous issues now is an excellent time to buy issues 4-7 containing the complete The King of Things story and 50 pages of full colour, oversize comic goodness for a mere £8.

I also drew the cover for this issue and am honoured to be in the fine company of Luke Pearson, Kristyna Baczynski and Joe List. Here’s the artwork without all those pesky words on it.

All photos courtesy of Matt Sheret.

The King of Things Pez!

I had to share this on my blog because it is beyond amazing. For my 30th birthday my friend Dan Baxter, who always make me excellent cards, made me a The King of Things Pez dispenser complete with it’s own packaging!!! I could not believe it. Seriously, how cool is this? I cannot thank Dan enough. There’s a few more photos on my Flickr too.

Paper Science 5 & Birmingham Zine Fair!

Hello you lot! This weekend, tomorrow in fact, I will be setting off for Birmingham to attend the second annual Birmingham Zine Festival. I’ll be at the Zine Fair (which is probably more comics than zines tbh) from 12pm -6pm on Saturday which is completely FREE (so you’ve no excuses if you live nearby) and it’s followed by a BBQ, a party (£1.50 in) and there’s even a picnic on the Sunday! Really, what’s not to like? Check the site for more details, I’ll be seeing you there!

I even did a highly amusing mini-interview with them for their site. I’ll be selling the usual comics but sadly not Blood Blokes as the first short print run has sold out already(!). I will have plenty of The Everyday Collections, maybe some original art and lots of Paper Science 4 and…

Paper Science 5 arrived just in time for the show and contains Part 2 of ‘The King of Things & the Shrunken Giant Penny‘!

I just had a sit down to read issue 5 and there’s not a story in there I didn’t smile at, they’re all gems. If you haven’t checked out Paper Science yet, get over to the We Are Words + Pictures shop RIGHT NOW and subscribe to get issues 4-7 so you can read not only the whole King of Things story but also superb stories from some of the UK’s brightest talents AND you’ll get them weeks before the shops do. I’d say it was a tremendous and exciting comic even if I wasn’t in it!

Hope to see you at the Zine Fair, I’ll race you to the BBQ. Bagsies on the spicy chicken legs!

TCAF 2011

I thought it was about time I made some kind of announcement here about appearing at this weekend’s Toronto Comic Arts Festival 2011. After having a brilliant, invigorating time at the show last year I have been invited back to exhibit again and I can’t wait. Featured guests at the show this year include Adrian Tomine, Chris Ware, Darwyn Cooke and Jillian Tamaki! Plus every other decent cartoonist you’ve ever heard of.

The big news for me this time is of course Blood Blokes #1 will be available to buy for the first time. While I’m waiting for replies from publishers I’ve had printed a limited run of 100 copies of issue 1 to sell at shows and hopefully generate a bit of buzz. Of course, I will have badges too. A 7 page preview of the slacker vampire story can be found at BloodBlokes.com. Those with long memories may remember I had a print copy of this 7 page preview “debuting” at TCAF last year, and it mystifies me the most why the full issue has taken a whole year to be released. But that’s how life goes sometimes and I really hope you’ll find the final comic was well worth the wait.

I am also very excited to introduce my children’s comic The King of Things & The Shrunken Giant Penny to Canadian readers through the delight that is Paper Science 4. I will have plenty of copies of the lush newsprint anthology for sale for just $3 CAN. Here’s a photo of the first page of the comic (click for a larger, readable version):

I will also have a few copies of the Welsh zombie comic Stiffs, which I coloured and lettered. Grab a copy of that while you can.

And as usual I will be bringing a bunch of The Everyday Collections too. Just Collections 3 and 4 are available at the moment, so apologies to any completists who may want all 4. Plus I’ll have ALL of the remaining original art for The Everyday too in neat and tidy little A5 folders that took me a whole Sunday to organise and like a nerd I loved every second.

Right, that’s a full itinerary of what will be replacing clothes in my suitcase, I do hope I didn’t bore you. Now, what will I be up to during TCAF! Well…

“Her Majesty’s Comics
Panelists: Adam Cadwell, Joe Decie, Kayla Hiller, Tom Humberstone, Phillipa Rice, and Sam Arthur

Moderated by Box Brown
Location: Learning Center 1
Time: Sunday 11:15 – 12:00

There’s an explosion of comics talent that’s been coming out of the UK lately; new artists, new formats, and new publishers. We’ll get you up to speed with the landscape of the changing UK comics scene.”

That about wraps it all up for TCAF news. Just looking at the books being released for the show, all the events and the long list of amazing artists attending I cannot wait to get there. And I really can’t wait to see what people think of Blood Blokes! It’s going to be a heck of a show. I hope to see you there.

The King of Things

The King of Things and friends.

It was announced near the start of the month that I will have a new comic appearing in the next issue of Paper Science (issue 4). I’m happy to reveal that it will in fact be the first of a four part story that will be serialised across the next 4 issues of Paper Science! The story is a children’s adventure called The King of Things & The Shrunken Giant Penny in which the titular King recalls the tale of how he obtained one of the rarest treasures in his vast collection of splendid things.

You don't know Jack? Find out who he is when you read Paper Science 4!

Head over to the We Are Words + Pictures site to find out more about the issue and the different ways you can get hold of a copy, or just head straight to the WAW+P shop to pre-order your copy or buy a subscription for the next 4 issues to make sure you don’t miss any part of The King of Things.

Paper Science 4 will be available nationwide on April 30th and it will look like this:

Cover by the infuriatingly talented Luke Pearson.
