In 2014 and 2015 Vertigo Comics, DC’s mature imprint, released a quarterly anthology title with a simple comic-related theme for the year. In 2014 the theme was CMYK (the four colours that make up the printing process) and in 2015 the theme was sound effects (SFX). The titles of each issue for 2015 were POP!, SLAM!, KRAK! and BANG!.

I was asked to provide the art for an eight page story in the second issue of the SFX series, the SLAM themed issue. Editor Jamie S Rich got me on board with writer Eric M Esquivel to create a fun story of a teenage punk’s first foray into ‘slam dancing’ (or ‘moshing’ as we call it in the UK).

I had a lot of fun with this comic, creating a small cast of new characters and trying to capture the unique excitement and energy, all sweat, love and fury, of teenagers on a rock club’s dance floor. This was my first time working with Esquivel and Vertigo and the first time my work was coloured by someone else.
