Chop Chop Client: Penguin Books Website: penguin.co.uk Date: October 2014 I was commissioned by an editor at Penguin Books to illustrate a cover for the paperback edition of the novel Chop Chop by former chef Simon Wroe. Chop Chop is “the story of a hapless young chef in the crazed world of the professional kitchen, featuring lust, revenge, neurosis and haute cuisine.” The book has a streak of dark humour throughout as the young chef discovers a world of forbidden tastes which I aimed to reflect in the tone of the cover illustration. The menacing chef wearing a monkey mask was the publisher’s original concept and a reference to a part of the story. Sadly, this cover was not used for the final paperback. Although all the editors at Penguin were very pleased with my work, ultimately the author himself wanted a different direction. Oh well.
